Overview
Venture off the beaten path to discover East Bali, a region that remains beautifully authentic and less touristy than the island's southern and central areas. This full-day journey takes you through dramatic mountain landscapes, ancient royal water palaces, hidden beaches, and the spiritual "Gateway to Heaven" temple—all while experiencing traditional Balinese culture that has remained largely unchanged for centuries.
Your day begins with an early morning departure as we head eastward from your hotel. The scenic drive takes you through changing landscapes—from the bustling south, through Bali's traditional heartland, and up into the cooler mountain regions where the mighty Mount Agung dominates the horizon.
Our first stop is the legendary Lempuyang Temple (Pura Lempuyang Luhur), home to the famous "Gates of Heaven" that have become one of Bali's most iconic images. This temple complex is actually a series of seven temples ascending the slopes of Mount Lempuyang, but most visitors focus on the lower temple (Pura Penataran Agung) where the famous split gates are located.
The perfectly symmetrical Candi Bentar gates frame Mount Agung in the background, creating a stunning photo opportunity that has launched countless Instagram posts. The clever use of a mirror held beneath your camera creates the illusion of a reflection pool, making it appear that the temple is surrounded by water. It's Bali's most sought-after photo, and our guide will help you get that perfect shot.
Be prepared for queues during peak hours—this is extremely popular, especially after sunrise. We time our arrival to minimize wait times while still getting good lighting. The temple itself is an important spiritual site for Balinese Hindus, considered one of Bali's sad kahyangan (six holiest temples), so respectful behavior and modest dress are essential.
If you're feeling adventurous and have extra time, you can climb the 1,700+ steps to the main temple at the summit—a challenging but rewarding journey that offers incredible views and a profound spiritual experience. However, most visitors are satisfied with the lower temple experience.
Next, descend from the mountains to Tirta Gangga, the former royal water palace built in 1946 by the last Raja of Karangasem. This enchanting complex features elaborate tiered fountains, ornamental ponds filled with massive koi fish, beautiful stone carvings, and the famous stepping stones that allow you to walk across the main pool.
The palace showcases a fascinating blend of Balinese and Chinese architectural influences, with dragon statues, intricate gardens, and water features creating a serene, almost mystical atmosphere. The crystal-clear spring water that feeds the pools is considered holy, and the entire complex is surrounded by lush rice terraces with Mount Agung looming in the background.
Don your swimwear (bring it!) and wade through the pools, stepping carefully on the submerged stones while koi fish swim around your feet—it's a unique and surprisingly meditative experience. The palace is a photographer's paradise, offering countless Instagram-worthy angles. The combination of water features, traditional architecture, and mountain backdrop creates compositions that are simply stunning.
After working up an appetite, enjoy a delicious Indonesian lunch at a local restaurant with views of rice paddies and the ocean in the distance (included in tour). This is a great opportunity to try authentic East Balinese cuisine, which has its own distinct flavors and specialties.
Following lunch, we'll head to Virgin Beach (Pasir Putih or White Sand Beach), one of East Bali's hidden coastal gems. This beautiful crescent beach features white sand (rare in Bali where most beaches are black volcanic sand), clear turquoise water, and a laid-back atmosphere far from the crowds of Seminyak or Kuta.
Relax under the shade of palm trees, swim in the calm waters, or simply stretch out on the beach and soak up the sun. Local warungs serve cold drinks and fresh coconut water. The beach is framed by hills on either side, creating a secluded, intimate feel. Traditional fishing boats called jukung dot the shoreline, adding authentic character.
This is your chance to experience a more authentic, uncommercial side of Bali's beach culture—no aggressive vendors, no beach clubs, just sand, sea, and relaxation. If you're feeling active, snorkeling equipment can be rented locally (not included).
Our final stop is Taman Ujung Water Palace, another stunning royal creation built between 1909-1921. This massive complex (8 hectares) combines Balinese, Islamic, and European architectural influences, featuring pools, bridges, pavilions, and sculptures spread across beautifully landscaped grounds.
The palace was severely damaged by earthquakes and eruptions over the years but has been carefully restored to its former glory. The main pavilion sits in the center of a large pool, connected by a bridge, creating dramatic reflections and photo opportunities. The elevated position offers views across the water to the ocean beyond.
Unlike Tirta Gangga which is intimate and garden-like, Taman Ujung is grand and open, showcasing the wealth and power of Bali's royal families. Walk across the bridges, explore the pavilions, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere as afternoon light creates golden tones across the water.
As the day winds down, we'll begin our return journey to your hotel, arriving in the early evening. You'll have experienced a completely different side of Bali—quieter, more spiritual, and deeply authentic. East Bali offers a glimpse of how Bali used to be before mass tourism, and it's a refreshing change from the busy southern beaches.

Cultural Significance: East Bali was historically one of Bali's most powerful kingdoms. The Karangasem dynasty ruled this region and even expanded their power to Lombok island. The water palaces demonstrate the kingdom's wealth and the raja's fascination with water architecture and gardens.
Lempuyang Temple is considered older than most of Bali's temples, with legends suggesting it dates back over 1,000 years. It's a key directional temple protecting the island from negative forces from the east.
Why Choose This Tour: If you're tired of crowded beaches and tourist-packed attractions, East Bali offers a refreshing alternative. The region retains an authentic, unhurried character where traditional culture still thrives. The dramatic landscapes—from mountain temples to royal water palaces to hidden beaches—showcase Bali's incredible diversity in a single day.
This tour is perfect for photographers seeking those iconic Bali shots, culture enthusiasts wanting deeper understanding, and anyone seeking the "real Bali" away from mass tourism. The combination of spiritual sites, architectural beauty, and natural wonders creates a well-rounded experience that reveals different facets of Balinese culture and landscape.
The journey through East Bali feels like traveling back in time—traditional villages, rice terraces worked by hand, ceremonies happening spontaneously, and a pace of life that's noticeably slower than the south. It's the Bali that longtime visitors remember and new visitors dream of finding.

Day 3
Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source.

I am 6 feet tall and 220 lbs. This shirt fit me perfectly in the chest and shoulders. My only complaint is that it is so long! I like to wear polo shirts untucked. This shirt goes completely past my rear end. If I wore it with ordinary shorts, you probably wouldnt be able to see the shorts at all – completely hidden by the shirt. It needs to be 4 to 5 inches shorter in terms of length to suit me. I have many RL polo shirts, and this one is by far the longest. I dont understand why.

The shirt was not the fabric I believed it to be. It says Classic Fit but was made like the older versions, not the soft cotton like my others. I don’t understand how the labels are the same but a completely different shirt. Oh well, stuck with it now.
